Zoox is taking a different approach to solving autonomy, developing a ground-up robotaxi designed for AI to drive and riders to enjoy. Without a human driver, the Zoox robotaxi relies on a robust perception system as its eyes on the road. Using an array of sensors and sophisticated machine learning algorithms, the vehicle is able to see and understand the world around it. Zoox’s perception system not only detects, classifies, and tracks different types of agents in an environment, but also understands context, such as a pedestrian intending to cross a road or a construction worker directing traffic. In this presentation, RJ He, Director of Perception at Zoox, will share how Zoox’s perception system enables safe autonomous driving of the company’s ground-up robotaxi. The audience will learn about:
• Unique challenges of building a perception system for a purpose-built autonomous vehicle.
• The sensor makeup of Zoox’s perception system, and the importance of multi-sensor modalities in creating safe autonomous driving systems.
• Lessons on integrating Zoox’s innovative insights into current or future self-driving projects.
RJ He is Zoox's Director of Perception, where he is responsible for Zoox robotaxi's ability to see and understand the world around them. He also leads the Zoox Boston office to assemble a world-class team of AI engineers. RJ was previously co-founder & CEO of Strio AI, an agriculture robotics startup, as well as VP Eng at Optimus Ride, an AV startup. RJ has also commanded a mechanized infantry unit, and holds an MIT PhD in autonomous systems.
The Pop in Your Job – What drives you? Why do you love your topic?
At Zoox, we are building a whole new form of transportation - a fully autonomous, purpose-built robotaxi. Every day, I get to work with deep technical experts to bring this first-of-its-kind technology to market. Most importantly, we work in a highly collaborative, psychologically safe environment, where we collectively come together and challenge one another to make personal transportation safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable - for everyone.
